Artist Communications Intensive

About

These are not self-guided courses. Each session is prepared specifically for you. Before we meet, you'll complete a short intake so that our time together is spent on what matters most to your practice. Between sessions, I review your materials, research your upcoming opportunities, and build the framework we'll work through together. By the time we sit down, the session is already halfway done.

This is an opportunity to work one-on-one with Artist Communications Agency to learn how to think about your public image — and to build the habits that protect it over time.

The curriculum is built around the most important questions artists face when their work starts reaching new audiences: What is PR, really? How do galleries and institutions think about communications? How do you make the most of the opportunities that come with growing visibility?

Each session is one hour, held over Zoom, and builds directly on the last. By the end of Session 4, you will leave with a customized strategy built around your practice and your specific upcoming opportunities.

Course Curriculum
Session 01
What is Artist Communications?

Public relations is often misunderstood as narrowly referring to publicity, or the process of securing coverage. While publicity is one of its tools, PR encompasses any and every occasion where you or your work appears before the public either in concrete form or as an idea. Session 1 trains the artist how to understand who their public is and how to communicate with them effectively. Learn how a proactive approach leads to a richer written record of your work and practice.

Session 02
Partnering with Galleries and Institutions

Most PR opportunities for visual artists are connected to their exhibition schedule. Communicating about an artist and their work is often a collaborative effort with exhibiting institutions. Session 2 covers the PR workflow and the different roles and responsibilities of everyone involved — goal-setting, strategy and planning, conducting interviews, and exhibition walkthroughs with press. Leave feeling confident about your role in the workflow and how to advocate for your needs.

Session 03
Deep Dive: Engaging with the Public in Person

The most valuable context for an artist's practice is their own voice on their work, and speaking with the public is a special kind of opportunity. Session 3 dives deep into the three most common areas of public engagement: press interviews, public programs, and studio visits. Learn how to prepare, how to ask for support from your partner institution, and how to succeed within the complex dynamics of public engagement to make these opportunities work for you.

Session 04
Artist Messaging, or Writing Contemporary Art History

In the final session, we use the lessons of the three previous sessions to create a customized strategy for you. This involves a deep dive into the messaging around your work and a strategy to help you build the historical record of your practice through forthcoming opportunities. You will leave Session 4 with a framework that is yours to keep and build on.
